How Long Do Soy Candles Last?

A beautiful candle should do more than simply burn, it should create atmosphere, fragrance your space evenly, and become part of the way you slow down and enjoy your home.

So, how long do soy candles actually last?

The answer depends on several factors, including the size of the candle, the wick, the fragrance blend, the quality of the wax, and most importantly, how the candle is burned and cared for.

A well-made medium soy candle can often provide around 30–50 hours of burn time, while larger candles may last considerably longer. But burn time alone doesn’t tell the full story. The way you care for your candle can have a significant impact on how evenly it burns and how much enjoyment you get from it.

Why Soy Wax Can Burn Longer

Soy wax is a vegetable-based wax that generally burns at a lower temperature than many traditional paraffin waxes.

Because it melts more slowly, a well-formulated soy candle can offer a longer, more gradual burn. This makes soy wax particularly suited to candles designed for relaxing evenings, quiet rituals, entertaining, or simply adding warmth to your everyday surroundings.

However, wax quality is only one part of the equation. Wick selection, vessel size, fragrance load, and candle formulation all influence the final burn performance.

The First Burn Matters More Than You Think

The first time you light your candle can affect every burn that follows.

Allow the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing the candle. This creates an even melt pool and helps reduce tunnelling, where wax remains around the sides while the centre burns downward.

As a general guide, allow approximately one hour of burning for every 2.5 cm of candle diameter, while still following the manufacturer’s recommended maximum burn time.

Giving your candle enough time to form a proper melt pool during the first few burns helps you use more of the wax rather than leaving unused wax behind.

Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

One of the easiest ways to improve candle performance is to keep the wick properly trimmed.

Before relighting your candle, trim the wick to approximately 5 mm.

A wick that is too long may produce a larger flame, burn through wax more quickly, create smoke, or cause excessive soot. A properly trimmed wick helps maintain a steadier flame and a cleaner, more controlled burn.

If you notice the wick developing a dark mushroom-shaped tip, trim this away once the candle has completely cooled.

Don’t Burn Your Candle for Too Long

It can be tempting to leave a favourite candle burning all evening, but longer isn’t always better.

Burning a candle for excessive periods can cause the wax and vessel to become too hot and may make the candle burn faster than intended.

For many candles, a burn of around 2–4 hours at a time is ideal, although you should always follow the specific candle-care instructions supplied by the maker.

Allow the wax to cool and reset completely before lighting it again.

Where You Place Your Candle Also Matters

Airflow can dramatically change the way a candle burns.

Avoid placing your candle directly underneath air-conditioning vents, beside open windows, or in strong drafts. Moving air can cause the flame to flicker excessively and create an uneven melt pool.

Instead, place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface in an area with relatively calm airflow.

This doesn’t just improve burn quality, it also allows the fragrance to disperse more naturally throughout the room.

Store Soy Candles Carefully

Soy wax responds naturally to changes in temperature, which is particularly relevant in Melbourne’s changing climate.

Store candles somewhere cool, dry and away from direct sunlight or strong heat. Prolonged exposure to warmth may soften the wax, while direct sunlight can affect the appearance of both the wax and fragrance over time.

You may also notice subtle changes such as frosting or slight variations in the surface of natural soy wax. These are often simply characteristics of vegetable-based wax rather than signs that something is wrong with the candle.

Fragrance Strength and Burn Time Are Different Things

A candle doesn’t necessarily need an overpowering fragrance to perform well.

A thoughtfully blended candle should gradually release fragrance as the wax melts, creating an atmosphere rather than overwhelming the room.

Room size, ventilation, ceiling height and fragrance composition can all influence how strong a candle smells. A fragrance that feels noticeable in a bedroom may naturally feel softer in a large open-plan living area.

This is why choosing the right candle for the space is just as important as choosing the fragrance itself.

How to Make Your Soy Candle Last Longer

Good candle care is ultimately about creating a consistent burn.

Keep the wick trimmed, allow a proper melt pool to form, avoid drafts, don’t burn the candle for excessive periods, and store it carefully between uses.

These simple habits can help your candle burn more evenly, reduce wasted wax and allow you to enjoy its fragrance for longer.
